Opening Possibilities

User-Centric Design for Everyday Ease

Following our successful collaboration with Keywing™️, we were asked to design another everyday product—this time, a ring pull can opener for those experiencing reduced hand and finger dexterity. Recognizing the significant impact that reduced dexterity can have on daily tasks, we aimed to create a solution that would be easy to use, ambidextrous, and cost-effective to manufacture and sell.

Led by Dean, the JNDC team embarked on a user-centric design process. Over 12 months, we developed and tested multiple prototypes, refining the design at each step. We focused on creating a single-part product made from one material, ensuring it was easy to recycle at the end of its life. This design not only simplified manufacturing but also eliminated the need for assembly, making it affordable to produce in the UK. By manufacturing locally, we avoided the environmental impact of shipping from overseas, further enhancing the product's sustainability. Throughout the process, we gathered feedback from individuals with dexterity issues, ensuring the handle was easy to grip and required minimal effort to operate.

The ring pull can opener launched on Amazon, quickly receiving excellent reviews, and won a Good Design Award. This innovative product has become an essential tool for anyone with poor dexterity, offering a comfortable and ambidextrous design that saves fingernails and prevents tabs from snapping off. The single-material construction makes it easy to recycle, and local manufacturing reduces its carbon footprint by avoiding long-distance shipping. This success underscores JNDC's commitment to practical, user-focused innovation and sustainability, ensuring we continue to set new standards in design and engineering.
