A Hole in One Approach to Drainage

Cutting Edge Solutions for Golf Course Performance

It turns out when it rains, things get wet. Golf course greens tend to suffer from drainage issues, requiring numerous deep, small-diameter holes to allow water to drain past the clay layer without damaging the grass. Traditionally, this problem necessitates digging up the entire green, removing the clay, and remaking the green—a process that is both time-consuming and extremely costly. A simple problem to fix, right? Well, it wasn't so easy.

Our client came up with the idea of adapting technology from another industry, mounting it to the back of a tractor. The concept was straightforward: punch lots of deep holes. However, implementing this idea was far from simple. JNDC designed a system that could punch deep holes through virtually anything without harming the grass. The solution was effective and robust, capable of maintaining the delicate balance needed to preserve the integrity of the greens while ensuring effective drainage.

The client conducted extensive "field" trials and successfully resolved drainage issues using the new system. Instead of the traditional method of ripping up the entire golf green, this innovative solution allowed for efficient drainage in just a day at a fraction of the cost. Our design now means golf greens can be drained effectively without the exorbitant expense and disruption of complete removal and reinstatement. This collaboration led to a groundbreaking product that maintains the integrity of golf course greens while managing water drainage efficiently and cost-effectively.
