AI Safety on Track

Transforming Rail Safety

Every year, there are between 200-300 suicides on British railways. Our client, a pioneer in AI technology, had an ambitious goal: to deploy an AI system on railway platforms to identify potential safety risks, particularly in predicting suicidal behavior. Transitioning from cloud-based concepts to real-world applications was complex, requiring a blend of high-tech innovation and practical application within the stringent confines of railway standards.

After being approached for support, JNDC took on the challenge. We developed the design of the physical system, creating prototypes that were so large they scarcely fitted onto an articulated truck! Installation of the prototypes had to take place at night, within a narrow four-hour window, to ensure completion before the track reopened for the morning rush hour. JNDC's team managed the installation on-site, demonstrating precision and commitment to seamless execution, which ensured the critical moment went smoothly and the installation was a success.

The installation marked the beginning of a new phase in railway safety for Network Rail. The AI system, now active on the platform, is continuously learning and evolving, contributing valuable insights to enhance passenger safety. This technology stands as a potential game-changer, offering an early warning system to authorities and setting a new standard in public safety measures. For JNDC, this project was more than an engineering feat; it was a contribution to a safer, more aware public space.
